China first time will going to send a robot that can work in ice in an Atractica expedit-ion. It is assumed that it will reduce the risk and cost in in scientific research.
A report said that, the project will start on october 2007, will use a tank-like robot that can not only easily move through ice, but also fly through low-altitude. It's weight is about 200kg, and it can carry 40kg easily and can pull 100kg within working radius of 25km.
It has a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and a meteorological observation device by which the robot can easily automatically stride across ice crevices and snowy slopes. According to the report, another robot, of 20kg and with a flying speed of50 to 100 km/hour will be there. It has an infra-red radiometer for observing ice on the sea and an aerial camera.
The Chinese expedition team of 219 explorers will be in 2 seismic station in Antarctica to measure tremors and tectonic movements on the continent. In this 24th expedition of Chinese scientists to Antarctica they will try to find whether there is ice as old as 1.5 million years on the continent.
